So, Amascut... if you wish to thread with her, comment here.

Also, for the curious, I'll offer her up as a source of bad ideas. Is your pup about to do something stupid in canon? Something uncharacteristic? Are you unwilling to take things into AU?

Amascut can help! This goddess of Destruction is willing to encourage your pup's destructive behaviour, and if she can't, she will throw in a free hypnosis session at no additional charge!

So hop on Amascut's Bad Idea express and comment below.

It's been a while, and Canon plus Word of God has revealed some new details. It's time I update this journal with new lies about Amascut.

Powers and Immortality

Amascut is most definitely a goddess. What this means is not exactly known, though. Gods, according to canon, are immortal, yet they can be killed using one of the Elder Artifacts, tools used by the Elder Gods to create and shape the multiverse. The local neighborhood of the universes, anyhow. Amascut and her brother Icthlarin are unique among the Young Gods, however, as they did not attain godhood by killing another god or by prolonged exposure to the power of the Elder Artifacts. The twin aspects of death were born gods (if the canon if the Kharidian religion is reliable). Their adopted siblings, Het, Crondis, Apmeken, and Scabaras are also unique, as they were granted godhood by their and Amascut's father Tumeken. But, it probably doesn't effect their immortality or lack of it. Even then, death via an Elder Artifact is not a sure thing, as at least one god has escaped such a death by giving up his physical form and going incorporeal.

Still, I have written Amascut as possesing a human body that is not extraordinarily invulnerable, at least not anymore invulnerable than a human. But, since she is/once was a goddess of rebirth she has divine regenerative abilities. She has so far come back from an atomic explosion at close range and self-immolation using her own very destructive powers. So what are her godly domains? It used to be Death, Physical Rebirth, guiding the body into the afterlife, and bringing death through life where her brother's were Death, Spiritual Rebirth, guiding the soul into the afterlife, and bringing life through death. Amascut has renounced her role as Goddess of Rebirth, through, and is now goddess of Death, Destruction, and Slaying/Exterminating.

In relation to the other gods in her canon, Amascut and Icthlarin, godly children of the gods, lie on the second lowest power tier, above the tier where godly creations of the gods, such as Het, Crondis, Apmeken, and Scabaras or Avatars of the gods rest. Where this puts Amascut in relation to other gods and anthropomorphic representations at [community profile] milliways_bar is unknown, of course.

Being at such a low power tier still means she can wield immense power, which has mostly manifested itself as fire based magic, intense searing columns of light from the sky, and mind control/body control/memory alteration psychic-like powers. It's odd that stories about the actual god of power and control never say he wielded such powers.
Appearance

Amascut has been described on separate occasions as handsome and statuesque. Amascut is most likely vain about her appearance as she has never disguised as someone not young and not beautiful. She is around 5'11" tall with a very athletic build. However, there are some jarring details to her appearance that can be noticed from afar but are less noticeable from up close due to some perception/attention alteration hoodoo she has got going on at close ranges. She is dark skinned, and how dark can depend on her disguise, but has red hair. She has red irises which usually go unnoticed (and unmentioned by me) because of the perception/attention alteration hoodoo usually effects all the people close enough to see the color of her eyes anyhow.

She usually wears dresses, and they tend to be of the ankle length, free flowing and light type. She also prefers sandals but because of the Milliways clime, she keeps boots in her room upstairs for the colder months. She also keeps (and sells) boots at home, but those are for different purposes.

As for her smell... she may have a slight odor of a dead cat about her which she tries to hide. Aura wise, she is a divine being connected to death, but she tries to tone that down to a nondescript feeling of unnatural power for those sensitive to auras and such.
LIES

Amascut introduces herself as Sarah Black in [community profile] milliways_bar (if she ever gets around to it), an odds and ends merchant who teaches various arts of combat on the side. It might be harder to get her to admit that some of those odds and ends are weapons and ammunition. Well, most.

As for the goddess Amascut herself, she is supposed to be cursed. No one is supposed to be able to remember her name, although priests that tend to the worshipers of the Menaphite Pantheon seem to have no problem remembering her name. Neither does anyone important to plot. Names, memories, and attention are power for the gods, and its easy to see why Amascut's ex-followers would want to curse her so that the world would not remember her name. Yet, something must be perpetuating the myth that the curse stuck.

Amascut is not above erasing other people's memories, especially memories about herself. She is perpetuating the myth about the curse on her name by using memories of her name as inroads to other people's minds and devouring memories as she sees fit.

Another aspect of the curses upon her is that she is not supposed to be able to posses a body for any useful length of time. Neite, her ex-High Priestess, assures the player that Amascut will be forced out of her current body any day now. Or any year now. The curse worked, and it still works, Amascut didn't break it. However, if Amascut is pressed for information on the curses, she will say that she is trapped in her present body by the curse. It is a more believable lie.

So after a drought of Amascut related content, the developers of Old School RuneScape (Runescape's low-poly concession to millennial nostalgia for how grindy the game used to be) put out a trailer for The Tombs of Amascut, a new dungeon raid

The lore of Old School Runescape and Runescape itself have been diverging since the players and devs collectively decided nostalgia wasn't enough to keep the game alive but disgust with the main games post 2011 development prevented the lores from syncing up. But it looks like somehow the lore about Amascut being a demigod instead of a full god made it through, but she's trying to become a full god? Huh.
death_gone_mad: A grey tiny kitten (cat)
So, there is a canonical Runescape AU that comes to light in the quest Dimension of Disaster, and while the scope of Dimension of Disaster is limited to the city of Varrock, there are some things that can be inferred about the rest of the world, especially given that the quest is a It's a Wonderful Life like story in that [player character] never went adventuring and some odd things about New Varrock.

Somehow, without [player character]'s interference, Amascut is neither phobic toward cat's or opposed to the undead. Are there more time travel shenanigans in store for [player character]? Is [player character] responsible for Amascut's phobia? Maybe, but it is hard to imagine how the Dimension of Disaster AU could happen while Amascut was around to pwn zombies or how she wound up being cat-friendly without time-travel shenanigans.

So the evidence for Amascut's changed stance is the Necrofelinomicon, a book found in New Varrock which plays part in the tasks/achievements A Cat's Bane and The Mummy Returns, in which a purple cat, a hellcat, a clockwork cat, and a generic stray cat perform a ritual to Amascut to bring their friend Fluffs back to life as a mummified cat (which is punny since she is the mother of all kittens that [player character] may acquire)

So, maybe, Amascut is not opposed to serving as the goddess of rebirth, either? Well, goddess of undeath, at least. Or undead cats. *shrug*

An exerpt from the Necrofelinomicon:
That is not dead which can eternal meow.

And with strange aeons even death may die nine times.

Amascut, not being cat-phobic, would have been coming into Milliways as cat-like things regularly. It sounds like that in the AU that she may be a bit of an eldritch thing (though, not an elder goddess and a pretty low-tier goddess who can still get away with directly interacting with mortals). I think I will have her come in as a nebulous cat shaped dark cloud with predatory red eyes Dark grey fluffy kitty with bright red eyes. Tis the Amuskitty. Ha.

It is almost 7pm in London and the podcast still isn't uploaded to podbean. fff

Well, such stuff happens when you lay off part of your community management team. A link to this week's Behind the Scenes hasn't even been posted to twitter yet.

Missing, Presumed Death is an upcoming quest involving Amascut's brother and fellow death god Icthlarin and the mahjarrat (and god killer) Sliske. Well, anyhow, on the podcast spoiler thread for us sorry sacks who couldn't listen in to the live podcast (for fuck's sake, the podcast is done over a fansite's internet radio service and not runescape's own website what the fuck) a summary was posted:

bullet point summary and my thoughts )

Fanon is still saying that Sliske is solely responsible for Amascut's crazy. Kinda like Amascut was Sliske's revenge on/greatest troll of Icthlarin? I dunno, it seems a bit too much like fridging Amascut to develop Icthlarin's character to me. Plus other things :-S

***### SPOILERS ###***

For a long while now, lore-hounds have been searching for the wandering ga'al, an abnormally born member of the TzHaar race. The TzHaar are basically a race of what can best be described as lava monsters, but to be more spoilery, the TzHaar are offshoots of the TokHaar, another race of lava monsters, or more appropriately, highly intelligent lava automatons/golems. The TzHaar probably count as automatons as well but they are far more independent than the TokHaar.

Anyhow, the reason players were searching for the wandering ga'al is because it promised to translate some books but then it got lost doing some adventuring.

Anyhow, a transcript of the translation courtesy of player Delta 206 plus some additional analysis by Amascut (the player, not me or the character/pup. Just another RPer. Well, sometimes she does RP but she mostly is a gatherer of lore and she's awesome), and put here to save the information from the page 50 monster. This has also been added to the runescape wikia as part of the NPC Dialogue project (without commentary). But, the intellectual property bugaboo might visit them again, so, having it in multiple places is good.

Chapter 1: Preface )
Chapter 2: The Masters )
Chapter 3: The Great Labour )
Chapter 4 - The Hallow Victory )
Chapter 5: The Enduring Vigil )

I disagree with Amascut's speculations on the present whereabouts of the Elder Gods. She is probably overreaching there. Still, neat stuff.

Centre of the Sun by Conjure One Feat. POE
Young girl in the market gives it to the men
When the men leave her eyes are red
When her eyes are closed again
She sees a dark market of a violin
And she sings they say the most horrible things
But I hear violins

When I close my eyes
I am at the centre of the sun
And I cannot be hurt
By anything this wicked world has done

Young boy in the market follows all the men
When the men leave he is out of his head
When his eyes are closed again
He sees a dark market of a violin
And he says they break the most beautiful things
But I hear violins

When I close my eyes
I am at the centre of the sun
And I cannot be hurt
By anything this wicked world has done
I look into your eyes and
I am at the centre of the sun
And I cannot be hurt
By anything this wicked world has done

Young boy in the market sees the girl alone
And asks her have you lost your way home
She sings you say the most beautiful things
Just like my violins

I look into your eyes
I am at the centre of the sun
And I cannot be hurt
By anything this wicked world has done
When I close my eyes
I am at the centre of the sun
And I cannot be hurt
By anything this wicked world has done

I hear violins at the centre of the sun
I hear violins

death_gone_mad: Amascut in a fighting pose (Fight!)
Now that the Stolen Hearts/Diamond in the Rough quest has stewed in the brains of the people who pay attention to Runescape's desert lore, there are some things about Amascut that keep coming up in discussions about her.

--Her psychic abilities. OR Oh boy, Amascut just keeps on coming up with excuses for me to run wild and godmod with her.

In the quest, she shows a tremendous ability and willingness to just compel others to do what she wants. This runs to full-on mind control to get some thugs who were demanding extra pay from her to fight the protagonists to death for free to getting the player character to toss her a diamond despite the objections of the player and the other two protagonists. This time, not even the slightest suggestion that Amascut hypnotized anyone was given, unlike what happened in the Icthlarin's Little Helper quest. Furthermore, it is suggested that Amascut mindwipes the player after the events of Smoking Kills, making the player forget Amascut and Sumona are the same person. Either that or the player character is stupid or just doesn't give a damn.

-- The true nature of the curse on Amascut. OR I've been playing her wrong.

So the mind control thing brings up a dialog with Amascut's former head priestess, now the immortal cat Niete. Before, the talk was that Amascut's priestesses cursed Amascut with the inability to take physical form.

Uh, no. Just no. Because she walks around in physical form all the time.

Back then I couldn't verify this because I didn't have the prerequisites to even speak with Niete. I still don't.

Now, the consensus is that Amascut's priestesses cursed Amascut with the inability to posses people.

What.

I suppose possession and mind control may be meant to be different things, but the end result is pretty much the same. Making this odder still is that Amascut's objective, at least one of them, in the Hearts/Diamonds quest, is to steal a diamond which also routinely possesses people.

--Amascut's plots and plans. OR maybe I am playing her right anyway.
Amascut loves convoluted plans. Her actions don't make sense otherwise. She is willing and able to eliminate and control anyone she wants, yet... Either she is playing a long term game of 11-dimensional chess or she is the luckiest psychotic ever. Either way, even though she engages in overt shows of power, she doesn't use her power to solve every problem. In a way, she encourages destruction, but doesn't seem too willing to cause destruction on her own. It is a group participation thing!

--Loophole abuse
So, big deal, the Edicts of Guthix prevents deities from directly interacting with the world. Exception... Amascut, Icthlarin, and other minor desert deities. This was confirmed by one of the lore writers. There is some speculation that the end result of the desert quests might be the elevation of Amascut from minor goddess to potential combatant in a second God War.

And the second God War may well be coming. Lore writers have also confirmed that the major gods will be returning, along with the ever looming threat of Zaros. Some extra ones may show up as well. It sounds to me like a whole new game and gameworld, but who knows.

wait, I knew about [community profile] daemonmuses already? It was in my autocomplete.

Anyhow, in case I want to stick Amascut into [community profile] daemonmuses, her daemon is a male spotted hyena named Yandu. from Hausa Daemonology, a demon notorious for causing paralysis, most times a black hyena (a genus to which superstition grants the ability to mute dogs anyhow), but sometimes a legendary blacksmith who killed his enemies by cracking open their skulls and who crafted the kankara (thunderstones). Can be appeased by the sacrifice of a bird of a specific color and gender, according to the demon's whimsy.

That being said, here's some potential backstory that bubbled up in crackchat:
an amusing thought re:settling. Amascut's daemon spent so much time as a lion when Amascut was young that everyone was sure he would settle that way, but, nope, hyena.

death_gone_mad: Illustration from a kid's book about Egypt featuring Ammit and Anubis (judgement)
So, the livestream that happened a few hours ago included some concept art reveals. One of the upcoming updates to Runescape is a qraphical rework of Al Kharid and two (IIRC) new desert centered quests, one of which may be a rework of Prince Ali Rescue, the other involves Ozan. The following is related to the Ozan quest. It looks like some sort of altar room.

Anyhow, the wall mural is the important bit. From left to right, there is Amascut, depicted as a woman with a lioness' head. There is a single crescent above her head. To her right is her brother Icthlarin, represented as a jackal headed man with two opposed and offset crescents above his head. The twin aspects of death and rebirth face each other, perhaps arguing, with some odd glyphs in between them.

To their right, raised above them a bit and facing away from them is their father, Tumeken, depicted as a falcon headed man with a stylized beak above his head. In the concept art for the room, he is on an altogether separate panel from Amascut and Icthlarin, perhaps on purpose. Tumeken, the god of sun and light looks toward a stylized sun surrounded by a depiction of a scarab, representing Scabaras, god of quiet and solitary contemplation (and maybe recycling); a stylized alligator head, representing Crondis, goddess of prudence and resourcefulness; a stylized monkey head, representing Apmeken, goddess of sociability and partly a trickster god; and a very stylized human head, representing Het, god of health and strength. These are the four gods Tumeken created out of four exemplary mortal creatures he met during his Dream, a crisis of conscious brought on when he saw his family and empire falling apart.

To their right is another panel depicting the sun, a falcon representing Tumeken, what I assume to be hippopotamus, which could represent Elidinis based on the double squiggly line glyph next to it. The hippo, possibly the river goddess/spirit Elidinis, stands above a depiction of the river Elid, which flows though the whole mural. If the hippo does represent Elidinis, she faces away from her children Amascut and Icthlarin and her husband's creations, where the falcon is again facing toward Tumeken's creation.

Is this important or am I reading too much into it?

Anyhow, the adjoining wall has two panels featuring representations of Tumeken and Scabaras. It might indicate a joint temple of Scabaras and Tumeken, possibly a center of learning.

Anyhow, Elidinis =maybe= represented by hippopotamii. Hooray for new info!
death_gone_mad: Amascut looking up into the sky and screaming. Picture from above. (challenge the gods)
I am really tempted to to use this (nsfw surrealism) as the eldritch-ish decoration to some grand, black door deep in the tunnel networks below the ruins of Ullek. I know its supposed to be Kali, but a lot of Kali imagery fits Amascut well, especially this particular despoiled maiden, birth and death stuff.

I can really get a lot of mileage out of Ullek if I wish to add Lovecraftian-ish horror to Amascut's backstory. Ullek was a major metropolis during the Second Age, and it was in reaction to Ullek's gluttony, wastefulness, and hedonism that Tumeken, Amascut's father (and by this time Amascut's madness was nearly at it's worst), created Crondis, the goddess of temperance and resourcefulness, from a crocodile that inhabited the swamps near Ullek. So, things were pretty bad. Well, not as bad as to cause the birth of Slaneesh or something, but then again, Ullek was just a city, not an interstellar empire. From Ullek could have come the modern cult of Amascut (which is very problematic, since Amascut is supposed to have no followers) which is focused on her destructive side and not on the whole death and rebirth mystery she was supposed to embody.

But if I ever do that, what would I put on the other side of that door?

Also, I was thinking of Judith by A Perfect Circle when Ænema was suggested to me, but that might not be totally appropriate. Maybe for the story of how Char defeated Death (and consequently Amascut) and the betrayal of Zaros by Zamorak.

Oh what the hell, I'll throw it in, I have plot specific songs in there anyhow. When those plots will materialize? Who knows?
